Contrasts in Habitat Characteristics and Life History Patterns of Oncorhynchus mykiss in California's Central Coast and Central Valley

چکیده
Oncorhynchus mykiss exhibit high plasticity in their life history patterns. Individual life history decisions are hypothesized to result from genetic thresholds shaped by local adaptation, with variation in environmental factors influencing the trajectories of growth and condition (e.g., Fulton’s K, lipid content). We compared growth rates and life history patterns in two coastal creeks (Scott and Soquel) and two Central Valley (CV) rivers (American and Mokelumne) in California. The two regions differed markedly in habitat and physical factors, including hydrograph timing and amplitude, temperature regime, and food availability (measured as drift). Growth rates of coastal age-0 fish averaged 0.1 mm/d in summer–fall and 0.2 mm/d in winter–spring. Growth rates of CV fish were up to 10 times faster than those of fish on the coast and had the opposite seasonal pattern, in which growth in summer–fall was faster than that in winter–spring. Fish growth also differed between CV rivers; the mean growth rates were 1.0 mm/d in summer–fall and 0.7 mm/d in winter–spring among American River fish and 0.7 mm/d in summer–fall and 0.5 mm/d *Corresponding author: [email protected] Received May 10, 2011; accepted December 6, 2011 747 D ow nl oa de d by [ U ni ve rs ity o f C al if or ni a Sa nt a C ru z] a t 0 8: 38 2 5 M ay 2 01 2

Growth Parameters of Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) escaped from sea cages in the coast of southern Caspian sea
Rainbow trout is one of the 100 exotic invasive species in the world, and the biological characteristics of evaporated specimens of marine cages on the coast of Mazandaran including sex ratio, length and weight relationship, and growth are necessary. In order to study the rainbow trout growth parameters, 90 specimens of this species were collected from October 2017 to May 2019 from catching bon...
متن کاملAncestry and adaptive evolution of anadromous, resident, and adfluvial rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the San Francisco bay area: application of adaptive genomic variation to conservation in a highly impacted landscape
The streams draining of into San Francisco Bay, California, have been impacted by habitat alteration for over 150 years, and roads, dams, water diversions, and other impediments now block the paths of many aquatic migratory species. These changes can affect the genetic structure of fish populations, as well as driving adaptive evolution to novel environmental conditions. Here, we determine the ...
متن کاملSmolt Transformation in Two California Steelhead Populations: Effects of Temporal Variability in Growth
—We tested the effect of temporal patterns in food supply on life history decisions in coastal steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus from a Central California coastal (CCC) population (Scott Creek) and a Northern California Central Valley (NCCV) population (upper Sacramento River basin). We manipulated growth through feeding experiments conducted from May to the following March using warm (2006...
متن کاملIndividual and Population Level Variation in Growth Parameters for Steelhead Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in Central California
17 We fit a bioenergetics model based on a balance between mass and temperature-dependent 18 anabolic and catabolic factors to growth data for juvenile steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus 19 mykiss) from California. We grew fish from a small coastal stream (Scott Creek) conser20 vation hatchery and a Central Valley (Coleman National Fish Hatchery on Battle Creek, 21 Sacramento River) production hatch...
متن کاملSteelhead Life History on California’s Central Coast: Insights from a State-Dependent Model
—Steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss display a dizzying array of life history variation (including the purely resident form, rainbow trout). We developed a model for female steelhead in coastal California (close to the southern boundary of their range) in small coastal streams. We combined proximate (physiological) and ultimate (expected reproductive success) considerations to generalize the notion o...
